Vediamo un secondo esempio pratico di lettura di un Pilling Diagram di una danza in cui si ha la presenza sia di figure standard che di movimenti coreografici “anomali” e che bisognano di una rappresentazione maggiormente dettagliata.

Prendiamo ad esempio la danza “Two Furlongs” – Anche questa descrizione verbale e Pilling sono stati tratti dalle pubblicazioni del sito “https://www.scottish-country-dancing-dictionary.com/“. La descrizione verbale è stata scritta dalla “dance deviser” Sue Petyt.

• Il numero delle coppie di danzatori del set (3 couples)

• Il numero di ripetizioni, la lunghezza della sequenza, ed il tempo di danza (3×32 S)

Nella riga al di sotto del diagramma:

• L’autore “deviser” della danza e l’anno di pubblicazione con le indicazioni della prima pubblicazione della danza stessa (Sue Petyt,2001, Caledonian Capers, http://www.suepetyt.me.uk)

• Indicazioni sul set (3C/3C longwise set). Queste informazioni ci dicono che il set è un normalissimo longwise formato da tre coppie e danzano contemporaneamente tutte e tre le coppie.

La sequenza della danza è particolare. Infatti si suddivide in due parti THE DANCE e THE ENCORE. Questa particolare forma, non molto usuale, prevede una prima sequenza danzata come se fosse una danza unica con le ripetizioni previste dal “deviser”, e terminata questa un ripresa con diversa coreografia ed anche questa con le ripetizioni previste. Nell descrizione verbale questo viene esplicitamente indicato nella stringa (S6x32)(3×32 Strathspey + 3×32 Strathspey encore). 

La prima di 32 battute (indicata con THE DANCE nella descizione verbale)  viene eseguita per tre volte consecutive con la normalissima progressione 2-3-1. E questa parte iniziale di 32 battute nel diagramma viene sviluppata nelle prime due righe (parte superiore del diagramma)  divise in quattro rettangoli di otto battute ciascuna, con ulteriore suddivisione (la linea tratteggiata verticale) in gruppi di quattro battute.La seconda parte (indicata con THE ENCORE nella descrizione verbale) si compone anch’essa di 32 battute ripetute per tre volte, anche questa con la progressione 2-3-1. Questa seconda parte viene sviluppata nella nelle ultime due righe (parte inferiore del diagramma). Anche qui quattro rettangoli a loro volta suddivisi in rettangoli più piccoli di quattro battute ciascuno dalle linee tratteggiate.

Vediamo di esaminare il diagramma nella giusta sequenza e di relazionarlo, passo passo, alla descrizione verbale della danza.

Battute 01-08 Dance

THE DANCE
1-3 First lady, followed by second and third ladies, leads down the centre of the set, WHILE third man, followed by second and first man, leads up the centre of the set, all finish opposite partner, 3,2,1
4 All dance right shoulder past partners to finish on opposite sides

 

Le prime quattro battute di questa sequenza, nella descrizione verbale sono raggruppate con 1-3 e 4 isolata). Le prime tre battute recitano “First lady, followed by second and third ladies, leads down the centre of the set, WHILE third man, followed by second and first man, leads up the centre of the set, all finish opposite partner, 3,2,1 “. Nel diagramma questo viene rappresentato tramite le due linee orientate (tratteggiata per le dame ed intera per i cavalieri) che indicano chiaramente il movimento da effettuare e la direzione, per le tre coppie, in cui effettuarlo.

La quarta battuta recita “All dance right shoulder past partners to finish on opposite sides“. Questa circostanza non è esplicitata in modo evidente, ma si desume (come il nuovo ordine su cui sono disposte le coppie) dall’indicazione che si trova nella parte alta delle battute 05-08. Ricordiamo che questa indica l’ordine 321 nella disposizione nel set delle coppie e la x come pedice del numero che la coppia si trova all’opposto (la dama sulla linea dei cavalieri e viceversa).

Le battute 05-08 indicano che si deve danzare una mezza hase in senso orario “All chase clockwise half way” tornando al posto originario “to original place“. Questo viene rappresentato, dalla menzione esplicita della figura (Chase) e dal cerchio con l’indicazione delle freccette sulla direzione da prendere. Che se ne debba eseguire solo mezza viene indicato dal segmento orizzontale che taglia il cerchio.

Battute 09-16 Dance

9-12 First and third couples dance half a double figure of eight round second couple. First couple crossing down to begin, third man continuing to dance up behind second man, and third lady continuing (by pulling left shoulder back) to dance up behind second lady

Le battute 09-12 del grafico indicano che la prima e la terza coppia danzano una mezza doppia figura di otto intorno alla seconda coppia “First and third couples dance half a double figure of eight round second couple“. La prima coppia “First couple crossing down to begin“ inizia incrociando verso l’interno (indicazione data dai piccoli segmenti orientati sul quadrato e circolo indicanti la prima dama ed il primo cavaliere), ed ovviamente la terza inizia con un cast up (anche questo indicato dai segmenti orientati sui danzatori della terza coppia). All’inizio delle battute seguenti ci si trova come rappresentato nel grafico.

Le seguenti battute 13-16 non sono altro che delle stelle di mano destra (RA) e di mano sinistra (LA) eseguite dalle tre coppie. Di mano destra sul lato dei cavalieri dalla prima e terza dama con secondo cavaliere “Second man with first and third ladies dance right hands across on the men’s side“ Di mano sinistra sul lato delle dame dal primo e terzo cavaliere con la seconda dama “second lady with first and third men dance left hand across on the Ladies’ side“

Battute 17-24 Dance

17-20 First and third couple dance the other half of the double figure of eight
21-24 The men dance right hand across on their own side, WHILE the ladies dance left hand across on their own side. Third couple finish back in place, first and second couple finish in the centre of the set nearer hands joined, second couple facing up, first couple facing down

Sostanzialmente è la ripetizione delle precedenti battute 09-16 danzate però dalla posizione opposta. Infatti la prima e terza coppia iniziano la mezza doppia figura di otto dal lato opposto (le dame 1 e 3 iniziano dal lato dei cavalieri ed i rispettivi cavalieri dal lato delle dame), mentre la seconda coppia nelle prime quattro battute (come precedentemente nelle battute 09-16) rimane semplice spettatrice……entra in ballo solo nelle seguenti quattro battute (21-24) per le stelle di mano sinistra (LA) e di mano destra (RA).

Battute 25-32 Dance

25-32 First and second couples dance a Rondel. On bars 31 and 32, third couple step up into second place, and first couple dance down to third place

La prima e seconda coppia danzano la figura standard della Rondel “First and second couples dance a Rondel“. La figura standard si esplica su otto battute musicali e prevede la progressione tra le due coppie danzanti. Nella particolare coreografia descritta dal deviser le ultime due battute sono leggermente modificate rispetto allo standard della figura. “On bars 31 and 32, third couple step up into second place, and first couple dance down to third place “, la seconda coppia esegue la progressione in prima posizione come da standard della figura facendo arco, la prima coppia passa sotto l’arco fatto dalla seconda ed invece di fermarsi in seconda posizione, danzando le battute 31-32 esegue un dance down per terminare in terza posizione, mentre la terza coppia con un cast up va ad occupare la seconda posizione. Nel Pilling questa variante viene indicata dalla parentesi graffa che indica la contemporanea esecuzione del dance down della prima coppia (la freccia orientata verso destra) e del cast up di una posizione (l’arco orientato verso sinistra con il numero 1 inserito) della coppia numero 3. Ulteriore indicazione è quella dell’ordine di posizionamento delle coppie al termine della sequenza. La frase “Repeat from new positions” nella descrizione verbale fornisce l’indicazione di ripetere tutta la sequenza dalla nuova posizione.

Come abbiamo detto questa è una danza particolare per lo svolgimento. Infatti appena terminate le tre ripetizioni delle prime trentadue battute, normalmente, si ha il cord di fine danza con i saluti tra i danzatori. In questa coreografia inizia…un’altra danza….anche questa di trentadue battute ripetute per tre volte ed indicata come ENCORE nella descrizione, e nel pilling.

Battute 01-08 Encore

La descrizione delle prime quattro battute sul pilling viene indicata da RL tagliato da una linea orizzontale per indicare il mezzo rights and lefts eseguito in diagonale (verso destra) da seconda e terza dama e primo e secondo cavaliere. Questa particolare esecuzione del rights and lefts viene indicata dai segmenti orientati posti sui simboli dei cavalieri e delle dame coinvolti. Contemporaneamente a questo rights and lefts diagonale la prima dama ed il terzo cavaliere, sempre in quattro battute musicali, si cambiano di posto danzando in senso antiorario all’esterno del set. Nel pilling questo si rappresenta con le linee orientate (tratteggiata per la dama e continua per il cavaliere) che indicano il percorso da compiere.

Le seguenti quattro battute (5-8) ripetono, con danzatori diversi, la stessa sequenza ma con orientamento diverso. Il mezzo rigths and lefts (ora verso sinistra) viene eseguito da terzo e secondo cavaliere e da seconda e prima dama. Mentre il primo cavaliere e la terza dama, ora in senso orario, si scambiano di posto danzando all’esterno del set. Ovviamente il percorso della dama è indicato dalla linea tratteggiata e quello del cavaliere dalla linea intera. Notare che tutte e tre le coppie, a seguito delle prime quattro battute già danzate iniziano dalla posizione opposta, mentre (e questo viene esplicitamente ribadito nelle descrizione verbale “(All back in original places)“) tutte e tre le coppie terminano nella posizione originale di partenza (nel pilling questo non viene esplicitato chiaramente, ma deve essere desunto).

Battute 09-16 Encore

9-12 Second lady dances half a figure of eight round first couple, giving left shoulder to first man, WHILE second man dances half a figure of eight round third couple, giving left shoulder to third lady

Nelle quattro battute (9-12) la seconda coppia danza una mezza figura di otto tra la prima e la terza coppia. La seconda dama passa in mezzo alla prima coppia dando la spalla sinistra al primo cavaliere “Second lady dances half a figure of eight round first couple, giving left shoulder to first man,“. Il secondo cavaliere passa in mezzo alla terza coppia dando la spalla sinistra alla terza dama “second man dances half a figure of eight round third couple, giving left shoulder to third lady“. La seconda coppia termina affiancata al centro del set, volta verso il proprio lato, pronta per eseguire la successiva figura.

Nelle seguenti quattro battute (13-16) le tre coppie danzano una stella di mano sinistra. La seconda dama con la prima coppia ed il secondo cavaliere con la terza coppia “Second lady with first couple, second man with third couple, dance left hands across “. Nel pilling questo viene indicato dai numeri delle coppie, La seconda dama (il 2 inserito nel quadratino) con la prima coppia (il numero 1 alla sinistra del quadratino indicante la seconda dama) ed il secondo cavaliere (il 2 inserito nel circoletto) con la terza coppia (il 3 alla destra del circoletto indicante il secondo cavaliere) danzano la figura standard della stella di mano sinistra (LA).

Battute 17-24 Encore

17-20 Second lady dances half a figure of eight round first couple giving right shoulder to first lady, WHILE second man dances half a figure of eight round third couple giving right shoulder to third man

Le battute 17-20 ricalcano “a specchio” le precedenti battute 13-16. Infatti la seconda coppia danza nuovamente una mezza figura di otto in mezzo alla prima e terza coppia. La seconda dama passa in mezzo alla prima coppia dando la spalla destra alla prima dama “Second lady dances half a figure of eight round first couple giving right shoulder to first lady“. Il secondo cavaliere passa in mezzo alla terza coppia dando la spalla destra al terzo cavaliere “ second man dances half a figure of eight round third couple giving right shoulder to third man“. Anche ora i danzatori della seconda coppia terminano affiancati al centro del set , questa volta guardano il lato del partner, pronti per eseguire la successiva figura.

Nelle successive battute 21-24 le tre coppie danzano una stella di mano destra. Sempre la seconda dama con la prima coppia ed il secondo cavaliere con la terza coppia “Second lady with the first couple, second man with the third couple, dance right hands across. All finish on the sides in original places“. Il pilling è perfettamente analogo a quello delle precedenti battute 13-16 con la sola differenza che trattandosi di danzare una stella di mano destra, ora l’indicazione è  RA.

Battute 25-32 Encore

25-32 First, second and third couple dance a horseshoe chain
25-26 First couple turn right hands all the way round, WHILE second and third ladies change right hands on the lady’s sides and second and third men change right hands on the men’s side

Le battute 25-32, sia nel pilling che nella descrizione verbale, sono descritte minuziosamente due a due. Questo perché si tratta di una figura (HORSESHOE CHAIN come indicato sia nella descrizione verbale che nel pilling) non standardizzata.

Le battute “25-26 First couple turn right hands all the way round, WHILE second and third ladies change right hands on the lady’s sides and second and third men change right hands on the men’s side” , chiare nella descrizione verbale, nel pilling sono rappresentate con le indicazioni TR (giro di mano destra) e XR (cross di mano destra). L’indicazione di quali danzatori devono eseguire le due figure viene data dai quadratini con rispettivo numero indicante la coppia per le dame e circoletto per i cavalieri. Viene data anche l’indicazione dell’orientamento dei danzatori con il segmento che si ha sul rispettivo simbolo grafico. Nella descrizione verbale è riportata chiaramente l’indicazione di quali danzatori eseguono cosa.

Le battute “27-28 Second couple turn left hand all the way round WHILE first and third ladies change left hands on the lady’s side and first and third men change left hands on the men’s side ” comportano giro di mano sinistra (TL) e cross di mano sinistra (XL) eseguito dalle tre coppie. Nel pilling si ha una indicazione analoga a quella precedente delle battute 25-26 sul chi fa che cosa tra giro e cross, mentre nella descrizione verbale questo è indicato in modo esplicito.

Analoga considerazione per le seguenti battute “29-30 Third couple turn right hand all the way round WHILE first and second ladies change right hands on the lady’s side and first and second men change right hands on the men’s side” in cui si torna a girare o crossare di mano destra ed alle ultime due battute “31-32 First couple turn left hand all the way round WHILE second and third ladies change left hand on the lady’s side and second and third men change left hands on the men’s side” in cui si conclude con giro e cross di mano sinistra.

La frase “Repeat from new positions” nella descrizione verbale fornisce l’indicazione di ripetere tutta la sequenza dalla nuova posizione.
